Wow that really sucks..our electric bill was $599 this month. I changed all the light bulbs to those light saver ones and try to use all energy star saver appliances but it still won't lower my energy bill. Rates went up and everything seems to be really bad as far as the economy goes so maybe they just want to charge us more so they can stay rich or something. LOL I'm just as desperate as you as far as finding a way to make electricity cheaper.

Let me know if you find a way to actually make it cheaper but a way that's not going back to using candles only and nothing else lol. Or as long as it isn't to just turn everything off period because that would be unrealistic.

Hi Ashely,

You can order and download an e-book manual that will show you how to build solar power system or wind power system.
This way you can reduce your bills or even eliminate it completely.

The manual will cost about 50$.
The solar or wind power systems will cost you about 200$.

Assuming that mostly comes from your AC.
Keep you thermostat between 78 and 80 during the summer.
Make sure you don't leave your door open for too long when you're coming in and out during the middle of the day and keep sunlight away using your window treatments.
Take advantage of the cooler night and/or mornings and open a few windows if the temperature gets to the mid 70's or lower.
If you're renting you could see if your landlord has serviced your AC lately.
I live in FL also in a 3BD/2BA small home and I have been able to keep my bill about $70. I do own the house and I have been able to change a couple of appliances for more efficient ones recently: refrigerator, dishwasher, etc. The water heater is next. I do have some large oaks that shade the house though most of the day.
Good luck!

Answer 4 Archipet: If the a/c is running all day, you need your apartment to be ...
Thu, 09 Oct 2008 09:23:10 GMT

If the a/c is running all day, you need your apartment to be well insulated so that less of the day's heat gets inside.

Make sure that the doors and windows are airtight so that you are not letting hot air blow in and push your cold air out. Fill any gaps with draft excluder strips (self-adhesive foam tape).

Get thick curtains on south-facing windows and keep them shut during the day, to minimise heating from the sun.

Double-glaze your windows - can be done cheaply with shrink film and double-sided sticky tape. You fix the film and then shrink it with a hairdryer until it is stretched flat with no wrinkles. I assume you will open the windows at night, to cool your apartment. If not, the double-glazing film can cover the whole window opening.

If you have carpets, you could put reflective foam insulation under them. If you redecorate, you could fit internal insulation on your walls and ceiling - there are a couple of links about this below.

Try to increase the shading of your windows and the side of your block that faces the sun. Just painting walls / ceilings white will make a big difference. If you can put reflective foil on the outside walls and roof that would be even better.

As well as reducing the energy used in your air-conditioning, look at all the other electricity demands in your apartment.

Is your water heated using electricity? You could reduce this cost by installing a solar hot water panel since you've got so much sunshine!

Do you use a tumble-dryer? That is the biggest single electricity demand in the average UK home. Dry your laundry outside if possible. If not, get a clothes horse and leave it to dry indoors.

One of the biggest electricity savings in many houses is to replace the old refrigerator and freezer with the MOST energy efficient models, rated A++. They will use just one-tenth of the electricity of tired old cold appliances.

Then remember what everyone else is telling us about switching things off. Never leave computers / TV / hifi on standby. Find all the DC power supplies (little black boxes, such as phone chargers) that are plugged into the mains in your house and ensure that you unplug them, or switch the socket off, when they are not in use.

All this will cut your electricity bill but you won't know how much until you try. Record your meter readings every week and see how much they come down as you start making changes. You also need to use these readings to check that your bill is correct. Hope it all helps!

Thu, 09 Oct 2008 11:15:50 GMT

In addition to the many excellent suggestions above, here's a small tip to try. If you are sitting for any length of time place an ice pack from the freezer in front of a fan and sit where the cooled air reaches you. Not as expensive as using a/c but only good for one or two people at best.

You can also try wearing dark clothes inside in the shade as they radiate heat better.

You can also now buy metres which tell you which appliances are using the most energy.

Answer 6 Jim: Running a full dishwasher can actually use less energy than ...
Thu, 09 Oct 2008 12:57:39 GMT

Running a full dishwasher can actually use less energy than washing dishes by hand (unless the dishwasher has a low energy rating and/or you don't use much hot water when washing the dishes).

Buying Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFLs) costs more in the short term but will save you heaps in the long term.

Buying a solar hot water system will cost even more but will pay itself off in energy savings in a couple years. If you're renting try to convince your landlord to install one. There are usually government rebates involved.

Turning appliances off at the powerpoint does actually save a lot of money. A typical VCR uses more electricity in standby than it does when being used. Plus those little LED lights are annoying.

Opening windows a couple inches on opposite sides of the house can cool the house down almost as effectively as an airconditioner. Try planting trees around your house for shade.

Other than that google it. There's heaps more advice out there! Especially with climate change so high on the agenda.

It should be volume, because a 8x10 room could have an 8 ft ceiling or a 15 ft ceiling.

But the industry is just set up to work from 2D measurements rather than 3D. It could be volume, it's just how the industry handles it.

Sat, 11 Oct 2008 19:43:39 GMT

Probably just for convenience. Most rooms in houses and offices are about the same height, so it simplifies things to assume a constant height.
Also, the power that the air conditioner needs to provide to maintain a constant temperature is associated with the flow of heat into the room from outside. This is proportional to the total area of the walls and not to the volume. (It depends on a lot of other factors too...)

Mon, 06 Oct 2008 09:28:14 GMT

To the best of my knowledge I believe dandruff is caused by many different things. You could have a dry scalp, which can be caused by the products you use, or over processing, or blow drying or a combination of all the above. Could be the gel or mousse or hair spray you use. You could try switching shampoo, or conditioner, gel hair spray. Try the kind specifically for dry scalp. Or try dandruff shampoo for awhile. It could be caused by your environment or even your air conditioning or heating unit in your home. The point is that something you are using or living in is the cause of this annoying problem. If you live in a particularly dry climate or perhaps very humid climate your scalp could be affected. If your air conditioner or heater keeps the air too dry in your home your scalp could become dry. If you change your hair grooming products and this does not help then try purchasing a dehumidifier for your home and see if this helps. Otherwise there are some good dandruff shampoos out there. For some people dandruff is just a temporary side effect of one of the above mentioned causes or a combination and will go away once you figure out what caused it and change. Unfortunately, though for some it is something you must learn to live with and the embarrassing flakes can be kept at bay with proper hair care with dandruff products. I am almost sure that for you though the answer will be found in changing your hair care regimen completely for awhile until the flakes go away. no perms for awhile and less blow drying and changing styling products until you find the combination that works for you without overdrying your scalp. Hope this helps....good luck

Hi ..congrats on getting your betta...yes bettas need a heater..temp should be 78-80. Sunlight touching the tank can really heat it up to much and then going into a cooler room can really make the tank temp fluctuate which is not good for the fish either...2.5-5 gallons is a good size tank for a betta...with a filter and a heater ...silk plants as plastic can tear fins. change 25 % of the water once a week and make sure you use same temp water as is in the tank and a good declor. 3 pellets 2 times a day sounds good. Blood worms can be fed as a treat and small peices of thawed peas are good once or twice a week also....good luck.

Answer 4 Shadow Weaver: How big is your tank? a tiny heater would be an excellent ...
Thu, 09 Oct 2008 15:37:33 GMT

How big is your tank? a tiny heater would be an excellent idea for a Betta. You won't have to worry about drafts, or AC. Keep the temperature between 75 and 80 degrees. 5 gallons is a great idea for one Betta, but I have kept in a Betta in a 3 gallon successfully. Of course the 3 gallon tank was heated and had a nano filter in it. Anything smaller than 3 gallons is not very advisable.

I strongly recommend that you get a filter for your tank. 100% weekly water changes can be stressful for your fish like you have noticed already. Plus it can be a pain for you to do. With a filter you only need to change 20 % of the water weekly. Your little fellow will be less stressed.

About the food, the Betta's stomach is ONLY the size of his eye which means he doesn't need more than 4 pellets daily. In fact it would be a good idea if you don't feed him at all one day, so he can regulate his digestive track. He doesn't need frozen foods but you can feed him some very sporadically as a treat.

Regarding the dying leafs... remove them. They are decaying organic matter and they will increase the levels of ammonia in the tank, which is quite harmful for your fish.

I have a male betta fish, so i know a bit about them.

#1. DO NOT KEEP 1 FISH IN A TANK! that is stupid and to much work.

#2. DO NOT PUT THE FISH ANYWEAR NEAR ANOTHER FISH OR NEAR A MIRROR HE WILL TRY 2 ATTACK AND EVENTUALLY DIE!!!

I have a good sized fish bowl, i clean it every 1-2 weeks. i have a fake plastic plant and i just baut some rocks for the bottom. I dont have a heater or anything. I keep my fish on my desk, he is not near a window, but the light does shine on him a little in the day. dont move him around alot, he could die. Keep him in one sake non dark (exept 4 in the night) place with a window, but dont put him near the window. Dont 4 get 2 feed him.

i give my betta fish (nick) 2-4 peices of betta pellets (tiny) per meal and i feed him 2 times a day. once in the morning once in the night. DONT OVER FEED HIM!!! If i were u i would stick with betta pellets, nothing to big!

have fun and good luck!!

Answer 6 enigma957: Temperature for fish is always a crucial point. When I got ...
Thu, 09 Oct 2008 15:49:33 GMT

Temperature for fish is always a crucial point. When I got my beta, the instructions said I should use room temperature water and not faucet water. I really don't know the average temperature for a beta should be, but you have to keep in mind that during regular circumstances, temperature will go up and down. What you should do is check the temperature of the beta's water when the air conditioner is on, and again when it's off. Take the temperature of the water when the beta is in the toilet at night, and when it's in the sunlight. You're probably going to have to let the beta sit in the different elements for a little while and then take the temp. After you have all the temperatures, go to your local pet store and ask them if the different temperature fluctuations is bad for your pet.

As for a happy fish...I've never heared of a little itty bitty fish needing five gallons of water. Sure, their natural habitat is an ocean, but I doubt your beta would know what a swamp was even if he saw one from a distance.

I'm not so sure about the food though. I fed my beta the red flakes and he seemed just fine with them.

You're going to also have to check with your local pet store about the real plants and leaf debris.

Answer 7 Leno D: I will try to respond to each important ...
Thu, 09 Oct 2008 15:52:19 GMT

I will try to respond to each important issue

Question
For a good guide to follow choose one book guide preferably which you can buy in a pet store usually and stick to it.

They are said to be extremely hardy, and do not need much care. this is true generally

to maintain the temperature firstly you should buy a thermometer which will tell you how big the fluctuations actually are and if you need a heater for your particular situation.

moving the tank around wil also cause stress, so if you can afford a larger tank (I recommend 5-10 gallons) Larger tanks require less maintenance and water changes, and temperature does not change so much inside. you can also keep your betta with mollies and platys and they will usually get along but avoid barbs and tetras that like to nip fins remember one inch of fish body length to one gallon of tank water.

set it up where you want it and your fish should be fine. if you choose your bedroom, a heater with a thermostat to keep the temp at a certain level and a full hood will solve your cat and aircondition problems most likely, but avoid putting the tank in direct sun or directly under the A/C unit

I feed it betta pellets, 3 tiny pellets twice daily, do I need to feed it the freeze-dried bloodworms/ flakes etc? This is fine but if you do offer the blood worms do it once in awhile with the other food, changing between them could cause constipation or make the fish like one and not eat the other.

And I do a complete water change once a week. NO, NEVER CHANGE ALL THE WATER, if you have a bigger tank you will have to change it less (10 gallons 1/2 once a month with about 7 inches of fish)
I have two live plants in the tank, and gravel, and the fragments of fallen leaves are always present in the tank, even when I just clean out the tank. Is this harmful for the fish? not in small amounts, also if you purchase a corydoras or some crabs they will eat the fallen leaves. consult your local pet shop.

Thank you so much for taking up your time to read my long question, answers are much appreciated! Thank you!!
You are very welcome. good luck.

Answer 8 Ken McGuire: First of all, while they are relatively easy to care for, ...
Thu, 09 Oct 2008 16:33:52 GMT

First of all, while they are relatively easy to care for, they are a living thing with needs. I hope you have been testing the water for at least Ammonia and Nitrites.

Temperature - you want upper 70's and you want a consistent temperature. It is easier to do this actually with a larger tank. Large temperature swings stress the fish.

Tank size... Go for as big as is practical. Bigger tanks are easier to keep at a constant temperature as well as need less care since it can be closer to an actual ecosystem, as well as giving you time before water problems become bad. 15 does sound like a bit much for one fish. My guess is this advice was for putting him in a community aquarium, which can be problematic.

Water changes. You have two choices here. Option one - change it all and you take care of all the wastes. Option two - have some form of a biological filter to take care of the ammonia and other fish wastes. Either option can work. Water changes do stress the fish, but no where near as much as swimming in toxic wastes. Swimming against a current from a filter is also stressful though.

Food. For a day in, day out food, a betta pellet would be better than bloodworms, but he will love the treat of the bloodworms. Try for a variety.

Dead and decaying biomatter (fallen leaves, etc.) adds to the bioload for the tank and will create ammonia which is toxic. If you have an active biofilter, it will probably raise your Nitrates and make you want to do more water changes.

yup they are tropical fish you need a heater

yup you need a tank at least 3vgallons but 5 is better

if you did not do a nitrogen cycle on your tank you will need to do 100% water changes weeklly

when you get your new tank also get a low power filter and cycle your aquarium
http://www.ehow.com/how_7595_cycle-new-aquarium.html
then you only have to do 20% water changes weekly.

you should not of accepted a fish without doing research

Sat, 11 Oct 2008 20:06:02 GMT

i don't know what kind of honda you have so the answers are gonna be kind of generic.

there are two fans out by your radiator, one is controlled by the temperature of the motor and one is controlled by the A/C....sorta.

in reality, both fans will run when the AC is on, of if the control systems decide it needs to run both to cool the motor.

the thermostat is a mechanical device in the water stream, there is no diagnostic system that tests it electrically.

if the gauge on your dash is going crazy you probably have an overheat problem that your fans are trying to control.

i doubt this issue will cause a O2 sensor failure the first time, but running it hot several times can cause the O2 sensor to heat up beyond its design threshold, and that might cause it to fail.

You will need to call around to all of your local air conditioner service companies. Inform them that it uses R-22 (that's what it said online anyway). You can verify this by finding the info plate on the unit. Some companies will charge them and others will not, to them its just not worth the hassle (they will not get enough money from you). If all that fizzles out, try contacting apartment communities near you. Try to go directly to the maintenance supervisor because they can tell you if they are able to help you or not (some are certified and some are not). Definitely do not throw it out! Good luck...

Sounds to me like your AC system needs "vacuumed down". This process involves sucking all of the freon out as well as any air that is in the system. It is then recharged leaving only freon and vacuum.
Another thought would be that the clutch on the compressor or the compressor itself could be intermittently failing causing such problems.

Tue, 07 Oct 2008 14:50:10 GMT

This is condensate water. In other words, the water is runoff condensation caused by the change in temperature when the air flows over the a/c coils. If this is a central unit, the primary drain should go into the home plumbing drains and the secondary drain should go outside. If there is water dripping from the secondary drain it means the primary is clogged and you need to either unclog it or have that done for you. If this is a window unit, the condensate is caused by the same condition but is normally just allowed to drip through a drain on the outside of the unit. Neither is good for much besides watering plants, etc. The very nature of the source means the water will have dust, etc., in it.

Sat, 11 Oct 2008 13:28:48 GMT

You can try lubricating the bearings with a light oil like 3-in-one oil but this sounds like they have pretty well turned just about their last turns. A few drops of oil where the fan shaft enters the motor and the same on the other end if you can see the end of the shaft "might" help...but...Most 'small' appliances like this have "sealed for life" bearings and when they wear out...that's all there is! You may need a new motor or a new AC.

If you feel "mechie" enough to replace the motor, most industrial or small motor supply houses like Grainger may have a "like kind" replacement. Take them the info off the motor ID tag or the whole motor. Call First! And don't get yourself fried doing it...unplug the AC.

Then again it may be as cost-effective to replace the AC ;)

The motor is shot. I'm afraid it's time for a new one. Also replace the start capacitor if so equipped.

HVAC Tech.: The double shaft motor you have is most likely ruined. They have bushings not bearings. The whole unit is called a "throw away" because they are cheaper to replace than to repair. Sorry about that.

Sat, 11 Oct 2008 14:38:05 GMT

I've met many a motor that got lazy like that where the only problem is that the shaft/bushings are all gummed up. Although getting some oil in there may work temporarily, the gunk is still in there.

Also, many times you can get to only the end cap and not to the shaft/fan end, of course both ends must be dealt with.

If you feel ambitious and handy, you may be able to simply disassemble the motor and thoroughly clean the shaft and bushings; if they are not worn, scored, etc., then oiling it and reassembling it should make it as good as new.

I realize the task of getting at the motor and removing it can be daunting, but once you get to that step, actually rehabbing the motor is the easy part.

Either sand the rust off the armature or easier to replace the motor. You dont put oil inside an electric motor.

You can try putting oil on the fan bearings as the other guy said.

Wed, 08 Oct 2008 14:55:52 GMT

In a refrigerator, the freezer at the top of the unit contains the evaporator, which cools the air. Cold air is more dense than warmer air, so it sinks to the bottom of the freezer. There the cold air flows through vents (usually inside the meat keeper) into the refrigerator cabinet where it sinks to the bottom of the fridge (the crisper). Air warmed by the contents of the fridge rises as the cold air displaces it, and the 'warm' (only a few degrees difference) air enters into the freezer compartment where the cycle begins again.

Similarly, with an air conditioner: the air intake is located up high so that only warm air enters the unit. After cooling, the cold air expelled from the outlet vent sinks to the floor, displacing the warmer air and pushing it towards the air intake.

Have you stopped to consider how very tiny your little dog is? A human running after it when it's not used to playing would be eoungh to scare the pee out of it and make it yelp!
Maybe you need to sit on the floor and play with it and the ducky, telling it you are going to get the ducky, and play tug with it.
Be gentle and soft...this is a very little dog you are talking about here. When I first got our little dog, I played with it too, but not loudly, nor standing up and stomping after it when it ran.
Good luck...it will learn your're not going to hurt if, if you just take yourself down to it's level.

It's just her personality. Maybe she thought you were going to hurt her. If that is how you like to play, you will have to start slowly with her. That way she will realize that you aren't going to hurt her. It is possible that she may never like to play the way you want her to.

She's probably just scared. I mean a 4 month old chihuahua is pretty tiny dog, so seeing a really tall person (in it's view) chasing after it would get scared and pee. I would play with it gently first and get it used to playing with others. =)

Mon, 06 Oct 2008 21:27:22 GMT

Dogs like people have different temperaments and personalities. It sounds like your puppy scares easily. One thing to remember that is especially important to do with a puppy is to expose it to all kinds of people, places and things while they are young. Socializing is very important, especially to your type of puppy. If you want to play with her I would play with the squeaky toy that she likes and be calm and not over excited while playing with her. You may want to get something that she can tug on and play tug with her so that you are attached to the toy. The most important thing is to socialize her now! If you don't she may develop a fear aggression problem later.

because your 5' something & she is like a foot 12" & here you come stomping at her you need to get at her level also she is a puppy that's four months old as you stated in all these ? you really didn't research this type of dog very much for the most part this breed is very nervous also they tend build up enzymes on their heart when stressed & cause cause wheezing or even seizures in some cases think you really should have looked more into these dogs before you bought it judging from all the question you've had this may have not been the best choice of dog for you.. these dog are very trendy right now but are a lot of work but if YOUR are willing to do it they are great pets. This means you must treat them like a dog & not a baby or a toys you must be her pack leader if she pees or poop in the wrong place let them know its bad rubbing the nose is correct & lightly swatting the butt( not beating) is appropriate these are animals not kids, teaching them to heel while walking ( don't use the leashes that reel in and out these are for people who don't know how to raise or control a dog and a lazy toward there animals. Follow these tips you'll have very good dog also watch Cesar Malian the dog whisper he is very good to

Public places are fun when you can do it and no one knows but you. Like at a corner booth at Denny's or the doctors office before the nurse comes in or in your parents bed just before they come home or in your sisters girl friends bathroom or in plain sight at the local park while you are lying down so as not to be too obvious. I like your name abnormal boy. We'd make great friends. We could get into a lot of mischief together. Write me if you agree.

Tue, 07 Oct 2008 16:07:44 GMT

When the cars are all plugged in at the same time (overnight), under the current electric grid system there would be brownouts or full scale blackouts on a regular basis. There is not enough power for everyone to have electric cars, and in large cities it is impossible to create the additional electricity required unless - maybe - nuclear power stations became much more numerous. The greens will never realize this though.

Tue, 07 Oct 2008 17:42:23 GMT

Well just for starters, you're not going to have millions of plug-ins all of the sudden on the road. There will be a gradual build-up, and there will be time for more power plants to be built if necessary.

However, studies have shown that if plug-ins and electric cars are recharged during off-peak hours, there's already enough energy that's otherwise wasted to charge millions of these vehicles. See the link below for details. And you can make it easier for people to charge during off-peak hours by creating a smart grid, which many utilities are in the process of doing.
