Wed, 18 Jul 2007 18:07:10 GMT

I would stick to the Trane unit. The units can only become so efficient and after that, the change becomes so minimal it doesn't make sense to go higher. I believe our AC increases our bill $30 a month when we run it. Even if you run it for every month, it will take almost 8 years for it to pay for itself. Trane is a more common name and service people should be more comfortable working with them if you ever need. See if Trane offers a higher SEER value, I am sure they do. If it is more sensible than $1800, I would think about it. By the way, are these installed prices? Is it only the condenser portion or do you need a new A Coil as well?

Wed, 18 Jul 2007 18:14:27 GMT

Our electric utility provider has a handy cost estimator on their website. For us at the summer kilowatt rate, a window AC unit costs us 60 cents an hour. But, a central AC unit costs $1.75 a kilowatt hour. A fan on the other hand, whether it is stationary, window or ceiling only costs 1/2 cent an hour. Check to see whether your utility service has a cost estimator to determine your exact rate.

Answer 2 : All you have to do is find out how much current your window ...
Wed, 18 Jul 2007 18:54:59 GMT

All you have to do is find out how much current your window unit draws. Most units draw around 6 -12 amps. Multiply that by the voltage, 110.

If your unit draws 10 amps, which is a fairly large window unit, that would be 110(10) = 1,100 watts, or 1.1 kw.

Our electricity here is $0.11 per kw/hour plus the fuel surcharge. So I would use .20 per kw/hour. 1.1 kw (20 cents kw/hour) = $ 0.22 an hour or $5.28 a day or $36.96 a week if you ran it non-stop.

My window unit draws 6 amps...so it cost me 13 cents an hour.

I was camping this weekend with my 5 month old daughter... I kept her cool by keeping her in her one-sie and was giving her hand towels wet with cold water. She loved them!! She played with them and sucked and chewed on them, her one-sie was a little wet but that made it cooler. Keep re-wetting the hand towels so they stay cool because they get warm.

What about fans? Have any ceiling fans going to help circulate the air. Is staying the night a friend's house not an option? I would imagine that neither of you are going to sleep well tonight. I just bought a plain spray bottle that I am going to use on my daughter when she goes outside tomorrow. You can chill some water and spray her. Do you have a basement? It should be cooler down there. I wish I could help you out, poor little girl. See if you can borrow some neighbors fans if you don't have any.

Not sure that I would have my child sleep with ice cubes in pillow cases. Do you have any fans? I would make sure the windows are open and put a fan in her room if you have one. Give her a bath before bedtime, not too hot. People used to never have air conditioning and everyone was fine. We are just used to it and can't imagine a life without it. If you are really concerned, call her doctor and ask his/her opinion. Good luck.

Same thing happened with me and my son when he was 8 months old and it took the apartment manager two days to fix it. WThe second day we borrowed a friend's apartment, but for that first night we kept the cieling fan on, closed the bedroom door and closet doors, laid him in his crib with just a diaper on and a receiving blanket near him for security. We have a cheap fan from walmart and we put that next to the crib. He was more comfortable than I was that night.

Answer 10 : My daughter is 3 months old, and we've been going ...
Wed, 18 Jul 2007 20:50:48 GMT

My daughter is 3 months old, and we've been going through the same thing here in the Seattle area over the past week. Last week one day it was 97 degrees. If you have an electric fan you can put in the window to draw in cool air, that is a start (or just put the fan in the room where she spends most of her time and let the cool air blow on her). I've also been using cool washcloths, wiping my little girl down with them and placing them on her head and tummy. I sometimes use a spray bottle to mist the air around her, too.

We live near a park, so I took my daughter there on the hottest day last week and set her down on a blanket on the grass in the shade. She loved it! It was nice and cool in the grass, and she loved the feel of it on her little feet - it was a totally new experience for her!

Is there a public pool nearby you can take her to? Be sure to slather her with plenty of sunscreen and put a hat on her if you can so she doesn't get burned. Another thing that worked for me - I put a cheap little inflatable kiddie pool ($10) on our deck and filled it with about an inch of water. Then I sat in it with her and splashed her with the cool water. She had a great time!

Other than the above, the best I can think of is to keep her someplace cool and air conditioned during the day (grocery store, movie theater, shopping mall) and then leave a fan going/place cool washcloths on her while she sleeps. Check her temp regularly to make sure it doesn't go above 100.4. If it does, make sure to call a doctor right away.

I hope this helps!

I had this happen twice with new babies, and I live in Texas.. so i know hot. What I did was strip my baby to just a diaper, put cool wash cloths on them and kept refreshing the cloths. I also fed them cool, not cold water.. too cold and they get a tummy ache. During the hottest part of the day, I went out to my car and started it, let it cool down.. then brought myself and baby out and hung out in the drive with the a/c blowing and wasting gas. At night, I actually rented a hotel room because it was too hot to sleep. Hopefully, you can get this fixed ASAP. Good luck and my thoughts are with you. Heat and little babies just don't mix; and I bet she is a crying unhappy mess right about now.

Wed, 18 Jul 2007 21:30:45 GMT

Wet some towels and cover the child over. Not ice cold. Use a wet wash clothe to wipe her face and hands every now and then. You should never have ice close to the skin for more than 20 minutes, but with a baby it's different. Ice can cause tissue damage on one so young.

Thu, 19 Jul 2007 18:51:42 GMT

We used to live in a mobile home where it got really hot inside in the summer. What worked for us was a variety of things.....curtains that are backed with room darkening material to block out the sun, a rotating fan in each bedroom, and the living room, and for the living room as well an evaporative cooler. It's like a big huge box fan. But there is a spot in the back to fill up with water and ice cubes. We can run ours as a regular fan or as the evaporative cooler. It really helped us and our daughter at the time.

Wed, 18 Jul 2007 21:06:36 GMT

It doesn't sound like an air conditioner problem it sounds like your car's cooling system is having an issue. Start with the basics like verify that you have full antifreeze/water in the radiator.... the next step is to see if the cars electric fans are going on when the AC is turned on, if the radiator fans aren't going on then you likely have a burned out motor or relay/switch that is mess up somewhere. Electric problems are a pain to trouble shoot but if you want to do it yourself start with the basics and verify that no fuses are burnt out. Now if the fans are working and the raditor is full of water then I'm at a bit of a loss... I'm willing to bet that one of those 2 things are your culprit...

Thu, 19 Jul 2007 02:22:18 GMT

IF it sounds all normal the fan may be slipping on the shaft due to a breakage of a pin or other device that secures it to the motor shaft. However it is more likely the fan is not turning due it freezing up. Some models used to have lubrication ports but isn't the case on contemporary models. You could try to get into the inner workings of it (pull it out of the sleeve) and try to free up the fan but most likely the fan motor requires replacement. Depending on age and size it could be more economical to replace the entire unit.

Home window air conditioner?
Makes the usual noises?

Ok, When you turn it on the compressor sounds like it kicks in but no air comes out?
then I suggest it might be the blower motor.
It is either frozen or just plain shot!

This may be also true if a automobile.

Either way you are going to need a service tech to check it out.

Frankly if it is a window air conditioner I would just replace the darn thing it may be cheaper.
Now if you meant that no COLD AIR blows out then I would suggest you need it charged . Again in many states you need a licensed tech to do it.

Thu, 19 Jul 2007 02:52:55 GMT

I need a little more info.
1. Is this a central unit, window, or car unit.
2. You say it turns on but now air is coming out. Do you mean you can hear the blower. If so you have either a blower that has come loose or more commonly a stopped up air flow. If the latter is the reason you could have one of three things. Coil is stopped up (not real common - usually happens gradually) or filter stopped up completely or you may be low on freon which could cause your coil to freeze up. You can tell by looking at the outside unit and the big line will be frosted with ice usually. You will need to turn the thermostat heat/cool switch to off for 30 minutes or so and leave the fan switch on the thermostat in the on position. If after that time you still hear it running but no air is flowing you will have to get someone to check the blower for you. After air flow is restored then we can work on getting the cooling part working. Good Luck and God Bless.

I think that I would take the car to another guy or shop and get a second estimate. Some shops will look at it for free and let you know what is wrong. They will put a dye in the freon, and run the system and use an ultraviolet light to spot the leak.

I would want to get the system fixed correctly. That way you will have the use of the AC unit until you sell the car. The value of the car will increase when you try to sell it to. Plus, it will sell faster. Do it once, and do it right. good luck.

The water is just collection from the compression of the a/c and the outside air, that is normal. If you don't turn your a/c off about 2 minutes before you shut the car down, there is water collected in the vent lines. Over a period of time it will turn into mold. That might be that musty smell you have. Good luck.

I really like this poem, it opens with such power and mystery and then starts to explain itself...

...but I have to be honest and say that something about the last stanza really bugs me...

if you were a sumo wrestler going to across niagra falls on a tightrope, you would have to be VERY confident to try that... on the other hand, you might be pretty nervous when you start doing it and you realize that you're huge, and that you will probably blow it...

I can't figure out if this dual meaning is something you were going for (in which case you should keep it) or if you meant it as a positive or negative (in which case you may wish to find a more clear analogy)

either way, I just feel it detracts from a GREAT poem! thanks!

Compressed air is not a good idea because too high a pressure will bend the fins. You can do it, but you really have to be careful.

Go to your local hardware store and buy coil cleaner. It is made to spray on your coil to loosen up the crud accumulated there. Then you just flush with a garden hose. This is how the professionals do it. You will have to buy a 1 gallon garden sprayer for this. It is only a 1/2 hour job.

Here is a link below for just one of many products out there.

Second, you still don't want to do this. You could damage the evap coil or the furnace and wind up replacing both of them because you are too cheap to hire someone qualified to maintenance your equipment.

1650 kwhr seems like a lot of electricity! If they still have a guy to come around and read the meter where you live, he might have read it wrong or punched in the wrong number. I have had that happen to me; got an electric bill for about 2 grand once! Usually, your bill will show the starting and ending meter reading values; go check your meter and see if the end value (on your bill) is a larger number than the current reading on your meter. If it is an error, they will probably ask you for the current reading of your meter and re-calculate the bill. (that's what they did in my case (but I had a different electric company)

Answer 3 : Maybe your bill list your meter reading. If it does then ...
Fri, 20 Jul 2007 03:34:48 GMT

Maybe your bill list your meter reading. If it does then grab " Last Month's Bill" and see what the reading was at that time. Go outside and read your meter now and do the math - then you can see yourself.

Let's not forget though, even if you only use the AC for three hours they could be three hard hours. I mean, I can run it for 5 hours and depending on temp and setting it could actually use less than you in three hours. Your temp could be much higher and your settings could be causing the compressor to operate 95% of that three hours. If I were going to keep it on that long I'd be sure its on energy saver.

I think, if this bill is seriously higher now than it was two months ago it has to be related to the AC. Remember, there are only three things that could cause this bill to be a lot higher.
1.) Rate Increase
2.) Usage Increase
3.) Reading Error / Billing Error

Yeah, that does seem like a lot...1650? We use 1000 on average every month and we have our A/C on all day and night. Hmmm, I'd check the meter at a certain time one day and again the next day. Then, multiply by 30 or 31 and that should give you an estimate of how much you use in a month. Hope this helps!

What is traditionally called "hot flashes" is what a woman gets when she is going through menopause. A 15 year old girl would have other symptoms if she was going through menopause. It sounds as if she is having other type of medical problems; like BP or a hear problem. I hope she goes and get this checked out soon. It could be dangerous.

This is great. What exactly is your question?

Carrier is a good unit, if it is still cooling, I'd keep it, and put $50-100 a month away for a replacement unit when it dies. Make sure it is clean inside and out, and you might get a few more years out of it.

It won't be the most efficient as far as electric usage is concerned. if something should happen to it definitely do not consider having it repaired - get a new one. You've probably got a unit that is 8 SEER, new ones are a minimum of 12 SEER.

Thu, 19 Jul 2007 03:29:21 GMT

I go by the old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" Carrier is a great name brand but your unit is not very efficient. We rate HVAC by SEER rating( Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) The lower the # the more it will cost you to operate. You probably have an eight SEER unit. The minimum contractors can install now days are the 12 SEER with the highest being around an 18 SEER. I wouldn't go past 13 because the savings versus the cost isn't worth it. One good thing about your old unit is that there are less electronics too mess up and they are hard to tear up. If you can afford it though get a new one because the drop in your power bill will make payments on it. Make sure you go back with a good name brand like Rheem, Trane, Carrier, York, or American Standard. Cheaper isn't always best. You get what you pay for!!!! Also make sure the contractor is State Certified and get more than one bid. Hope this helps!!!!!!

Thu, 19 Jul 2007 01:06:40 GMT

Shouldn't be a problem. All the ac unit consists of basically is a compressor, a fan and a condensor coil.

They work together to compress refrigerant and send it to the evaporator in the furnace inside the house, where it takes heat out of the air.

The ductwork inside the house has no idea what the brand name of the ac unit outside is.

So long as all the pressure switches and thermostats communicate with each other, it should work fine.

Wed, 18 Jul 2007 20:07:37 GMT

You can't move them or they will perish. If you move them the parents will not go to the new spot to care for them so they will starve. Wild animals normally do not take care of babies who have been too close to humans so if you move them you will basically be ensuring that they perish.

Wed, 18 Jul 2007 20:07:54 GMT

As long as you move the nest nearby so the parents can find it, you should be okay.

The story that a mother bird won't take care of it's young if you happen to have contact with it is just an urban legend. However, I would still try to avoid actually touching the birds either way.

Please don't try to move this nest on your own!

If you simply MUST have it removed, please call your local police non-emergency number or ASPCA for help. They can direct you to a local wildlife rehabilitator or wildlife officer that can tell you what you should and should not do.

This is sad. They want to get rid of the nest???? Kill the babies and throw the nest away.

They did not notice a nest was being built there? That was the time to act, not now.

Let the parents raise the babies to fledgeling. Just a couple of weeks. Once the babies are out of the nest IF and I say IF there are any bugs get rid of them then. Clean up the nest and put a slanted piece of wire over the AC so it will not happen again.

So sorry that your parents are inconvenienced by nature.
The sounds of nature may be noise to them, but to the birds it means life. Perhaps soft earplugs for a few weeks until the babies are gone??

Bobby F is right.

Nature is a beautiful thing and is a pleasure to be around, NOT an inconvenience! Don't disturb it!

Your parents should feel privilaged that they live so close to it! Maybe the birds are wishing they had never built their nest there now!

Wed, 18 Jul 2007 21:02:45 GMT

just wait it out, they should be fledglings soon, they won't get any bugs that are of real concern. the noise will only be a small inconvenience for a little bit. if you move the nest, the parents might not find it and the birds will die. you can't feed them yourself, they need a mother. contact a wild life rehabilitator and they might assist you.

Wed, 18 Jul 2007 22:30:17 GMT

If you are in the US, it is actually illegal to disturb an active nest. You need to wait until the babies fledge (leave the nest) and then destroy the nest. Then, your parents need to check daily to make certain that the birds are not making a new nest. As long as the birds have not laid an egg yet, it is legal to remove the nest. Remind them to keep a check on it next year, so they are not in the same situation.

Answer 12 : It is illegal for you to disturb this nest in ANY way, all ...
Thu, 19 Jul 2007 00:00:27 GMT

It is illegal for you to disturb this nest in ANY way, all native birds are protected by law and you can be heavily fined or even jailed for disturbing or moving a nest. If there are already chicks in the nest...then it should not be too long before they leave...most birds stay in the nest for about 2 weeks. Tell your parents they cannot control nature and to invest in a good pair of ear plugs. Afterall it is only 2 weeks of their life to allow birds to live an entire lifetime!! Stop being selfish and let nature take it's course. There are bird nests all over the world and people do not get bugs from them. Some nests have mites in them...but unless your parents are putting their hands in the nest..they are not going to have a problem..plus these are bird mites and cannot live on humans.

well - heat is going to rise... do you have a vent up there for it to escape? If not... it is going to be hotter - no matter what you do. Are you sure the upstairs is insulated enough? We have a vent upstairs with the spinning outside vent on it. It takes out allot of that heat. Check with someone at Lowes, etc. And tell them your problem and maybe it is something simple to remedy.

Or keep the upstairs dark and place a large fans in the doorways that point towards the stairs. Then a fan at the botton of the stairs that points upward...this will create some good circulation.

You need to create vents and airflow between the upper and lower floors. You can exhaust hot air to the outside (like an attic fan) or you can force cool air up (and hot air down) using fans. If there are sufficient vents, the air will circulate naturally.
