The key is to keep the IR enegry from the sun out of the house. Replace window with Low E glass, or use a low E reflective film. A small window unit air conditioner may help as you can use it to cool only the room you use the most. Also, close AC vents in rooms that are not in use.

Keeping the shades drawn in the day to keep out sunlight helps. Open the shades and windows at night to let cool air, it will help keep the house cool during the day. Yes, bamboo sheets do having a cooling effect, even more though is a bamboo mat that lays on top of your mattress. Many Chinese people sleep directly on them but putting a sheet on top will not alter its affect. As for a window a/c, that depends on where you live and what floor you live on.

Mon, 17 Mar 2008 20:43:57 GMT

More info is needed to answer this question but I'll tell you somethings that probably will help. Yes E- films for windows reduce the waves of sunlight from heating the rooms.Overhangs help block sunlight in summer and let the sun collect in the winter for added heat. Also just as caulking around windows and cutting down drafts, and insulating helps save heat - it also keeps heat out. The prior usually is the problem. You should also clean heat exchangers on your air conditioning unit just like a furnace filter it will work better. Have the system checked for freon and proper pressures. Most small window air conditioners cost more to operate because they are smaller and can't keep up with infiltration and exfiltration.

If the fan is a viscous type fan it will spin with the engine running as the thick viscous liquid is spun round and picks up the fan drive inside, now you check when the engine isnt running by giving it a flick with your fingers and if it spins freely and stops it ok.these fans run all the time unless seized.

If you're rent is paid and there is a bona-fide health issue, you should (check your local laws) be able to hire someone to fix it and have it billed to your landlord.

You need to move out. Did you see that show where the father is essentially brain damaged as if he was suffocated and left brain damage and their three year old died? You need to run when kids are involved, it starts with the loss of short term memory...

Sat, 15 Mar 2008 17:57:39 GMT

Thats very serious. I would call your county or state health dept and see if they could force action on your landlord. Im taking a law class right now and as a renter you are entitled to a safe and sound house. Dont pay for it to get fixed i think he has x amount of days to fix it. As far as asthma symptoms go, i would tell your son/daughter to just keep his/her inhaler with them and remember to replace your houses air filter every month that will help.

Mon, 17 Mar 2008 23:14:55 GMT

Hm...
There are a lot of straightening 'protectors' out there. There are so creams that you can put in your hair before you straighten it and it won't fry it so much. Pretty much anything you do with your hair it's going to damage it.
Permanent straightening I think will damage your hair more than flat ironing it everyday.
You can also buy different shampoo's and conditioners that repair your hair. Sunsilk I've learned works very well.
Hope this helped.

Mon, 17 Mar 2008 23:15:00 GMT

I think it would be OK...especially if you're just touching up. If permanent straightening didn't ruin it, touchign up with a straightener shouldn't hurt it.

Mon, 17 Mar 2008 23:18:40 GMT

it shouldnt fry your hair as long as the striaghtener isnt a cheap junky one, they make spray and creams that you can use that woth help make your hair striaght. i dont know about the permant striaght though, it probably would leave it alone because my one friend has a perm and she uses a straightener alot and the next time that she washes her hair it goes back to being curly. just dont get a cheap one, they will fry your hair, remington has a good striaghting line that works well, and it isnt as expensive as some of the other ones

It all depends what kind of products you use...(I tryed the wet to dry staightener, which claimed it was healthier for my hair, but i looked like a mess of split ends after i straightened it) I straighten my hair daily, and I reccomend conair products.....It'sbest if you use a serum on your hair before you straighten, like Hair toys shine serum, or Garnier sleek and shine. You can also use that after to make it look more sleek. I like to use Herbal Essences dangerously sraight finishing spray after i straighten to keep it in palce and keep the fizzles at bay. I know it seems like alot of stuff to do in the morning just for sraight hair, but it's not at all. Another possibility is using Herbal Essances Dangerously Straight Shampoo and conditioner, it keeps it pretty straight, but not as good as it would with a straightening iron..................It also depends on your hair.....

Sat, 15 Mar 2008 19:10:55 GMT

i don't think you can do that, because the moment you turn the window a/c on its side can affect the compressor especially the piston type and also, the unit has a drain pipe for the water to flow in the direction away from the electricals of the a/c in its turn in one side then there is a good chance that your unit will be shorted

Answer 2 : I would agree with Rynald. You are risking the cost of the ...
Sat, 15 Mar 2008 19:28:04 GMT

I would agree with Rynald. You are risking the cost of the appliance by turning it on its side. Drainage of moisture in the form of water from your home is a byproduct of the cooling process. The AC is designed to collect that water and drain it from the bottom of the frame. If you turn the unit on its side there is no place for that water to go except fill the frame or drip where it shouldn't. In addition, compressors are not really designed to run mounted sideways. If they were, you can be assured the instructions would indicate a variety of mounting options.
If you can afford a new AC every so often, on short notice during hot weather times, go ahead and do what you suggest.

Sat, 15 Mar 2008 20:14:24 GMT

Good chance the unit will be damaged on its side. Either by interrupting the designed oil migration to the compressor or through improper drainage of the condensation (this might even damage your home depending on where it goes).

There are window units made specifically for horizontal sliders. They are less common, but usually available at appliance outlets.

The conventional window units come with side panels. I'd really be surprised if horizontal models didn't also come with the needed panels to seal the opening.

You could make your own with Plexiglas. A semi-handy person could whip something creative up with any variety of materials.

~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+

On edit: LOL. I understand.

There are several ways. Some more aggressive and permanent than others.

If you are just trying to seal the gap from air coming in (and insects), then foam rubber strips will suffice.

However, if you are also concerned about the weather (rain and such), then some latex caulk needs to be involved.

If you are concerned with someone breaching the window (burglary), then the cover would need to be permanently affixed to the sill (like a window frame in of itself).

If it were me... a wooden frame with plexiglas. 1/2" x 1/2" strips would be fine. Held together with quality latex caulk. Enough to seal out the sultry summer, but also easily removed with a putty knife.

Make a visit to your local hardware. Chances are they've helped someone in the past do exactly what you want.

Good luck!

Sat, 15 Mar 2008 20:57:44 GMT

You cannot put an AC designed for flat on its side without reworking it, specifically compressor supports. There are rubber supports under the compressor that will not take that kind of a side load.

Then there is the discharge of dehumidity water which in the new units is "sprayed" on the condenser coil from the top side of that coil to cool the unit.

Take and rework the compressor supports so that they will take the side loading. You might have to run a bolt thru the supports and add rubber gromets but this side running will in no way cause any problems to the compressor or the circulating fans.

This has been done many times so yours is not the first. On mist, well you just figure that out somehow so it would drain the excess if it should occur by drilling a hole somewhere in the sheet metal. .

You can of course, buy a unit for a slider window if you havent purchased the AC yet. Greeting from X Brooklyn Resident.

check out Lowe's and home depot for the tall thin type air conditioner that you need. I've seen them but thought them to be expensive. wait till they put all their stuff out for summer cooling. I've already seen a few on the floor (regular sizes) at Lowe's. they're TALL AND THIN.
check them out.

-Hamsters and gerbils aren't much different except for size.
-Get a regular Hamster, not any of the more exotic ones, it will be more likely to be nice.
-Just go to your local pet store, I don't think you will find them somewhere else.
-Hamsters are naturally desert creatures and like to be warm.
-The hamster would be more likely to harm the ferrets, by biting them, the ferrets wouldn't mind the hamster. -I know this from experience, my hamster attacked my guinea pig, while the ferrets didn't mind the guinea pig.

Answer 2 : This question really depends on what you are looking for ...
Sun, 16 Mar 2008 22:17:19 GMT

This question really depends on what you are looking for with a pet. Hamsters are nocturnal.....gerbils are active during the day.

Depending on the hamster, they can be easier to hold once tame. But, this is not always the case.

Gerbils are social creatures, more than one can live in a cage (provided they are from the same litter). Hamsters are usually solitary (except the dwarf hamsters, they can live together but sometimes will still fight).

I would honestly just keep your pets in the house if possible. I don't think the ferrets being in there will stress the hamster. Just don't let them out at the same time as the hamster and make sure that when they are out they can't get to the hamster.

As far as male/female there really isn't much of a difference.

You could look at a site like www.craigslist.com or something to find hamsters but, depending on where you live a pet store might be the only place. You could try petfinder.com too but I've not seen hamsters or gerbils on there much.

Petsmart takes care of their animals, their breeder wasn't. There is a difference in that.

I hope I have answered most if not all of your questions.....

Sun, 16 Mar 2008 22:25:32 GMT

-hamsters and gerbils are pretty much the same, but hamster are nocturnal animals, unless you can somehow train them
-i would suggest dwarf hamsters, they seem to get along well with other hamsters
-finding gerbils would be easier to find at an adoption center. I've heard the petsmart isn't good at taking care of animals, but I've been there before (for supplies) and all the animals LOOKED fine, but I'm not sure
-the garage would be fine as long as there were no fumes from cars in there (could be dangerous to the hamster/gerbil)
-I don't think the hamster would be stressed out being NEAR the ferrets, but I wouldn't suggest letting the ferrets and hamsters commute.

Good luck!!!!!

I say get a teddy bear hamster. I have one and they are adorable. Get a male. they are more friendly than female hamsters.
Any pet store. I personally got mine at petsmart. I didn't know that they didn't take care of them properly but think of it like this. You are saving a hamster from somewhere he is not being treated properly.
DO NOT put your hamster in the garage it is un healthy and un safe.
you probably should take you ferrets out of the garage and you can keep them in the same room, but on oposite sides one might get frightened,

goos luck!

Mon, 17 Mar 2008 00:27:51 GMT

I think you should get a hamster.

Hamsters and gerbils are about the same but I find hamsters more cute and friendlier.

You should get a Golden hamster or teddy bear hamster or a Syrian hamster, they are very friendly, easy to care for and cute.

You should buy your pet at pet land or from a breeder.

I don't think you should put your hamster in the garage because it has a lot of gas and it smells a lot so it could be toxic to your hamster.

I think if you put your hamster close to your ferret then it could get scared, and as you said stressed.

Anyways...I hope i helped you and good luck! :)

Support your claims with data. Do a quick calculation to show how much electricity your lights would consume, compared to his AC. The AC uses much more energy.

The burden of proof is on your neighbor. If he can't offer evidence to support his accusation, then he has no case.

Your neighbor is crazy. Simply tell him that he is being rediculous and of course you haven't used his electricity and wouldn't think of it. Do it in a nice way since you have to live next to this jerk.

You don't have to prove your innocence. If you ever go to court (doubtful) he will have to prove your guilt, and he won;t be able to.

Sun, 16 Mar 2008 07:28:56 GMT

Like the first person said, he has to prove you did it.. you don't have to prove your innocence.

Innocent until proven guilty.

But maybe gather up your previous electric bills... one of normal usage and one with Christmas light usage. Show him that yours went up too.

If you have any film evidence or witnesses (not family members) that remember seeing his A/C turn on, ask them to come with you to court (if you have to go).

Tell him that you tried to tell him his A/C was on.

Maybe he can get an electric bill statement saying where he was billed from (what area of the house)?? That won't work if the A/C is right by the outdoor plug though... unless they can see that 'yes, $65 of that bill came from the air conditioning unit'.

But really, you didn't use his electricity.... if he wants to accuse you it's up to him to get evidence against you. Innocence is assumed and unless there is substantial evidence against you (he probably won't... he sounds like he's just bitter about the bill right and wants someone to blame/pay), you won't have to worry about a thing.

Good luck! :)

The unit you heard running could have been a heat pump. It is the same as an air conditioner and would run just like an air conditioner, so you will hear it running in the winter.
As for him taking you to court. Most everyone had the right idea. He has to prove it. He can't just say it and right now I can't think of anyway he could prove it.

Answer 9 : Put the fish in the tank now, right now it's perfectly ...
Sun, 16 Mar 2008 05:06:44 GMT

Put the fish in the tank now, right now it's perfectly safe for them.

Nothing you can do is better than putting them in the tank.

The bag or bowl have NO filter at all, so they cant be better than even an uncycled tank.

Even though the tanks not cycled, the water is safe, it's clean conditioned tap water, it is perfectly safe, for now.

The problem with an uncycled tank will occur in a weeks time. Thats when the ammonia from the fishes waste will start to build up, but the filters cycle wont be running yet. The ammonia may build up in the water and poisen the fish. This wont happen overnight, not from 2 guppies anyway and you can do frequent partial water changes to get the fish through this period. Once you get over any ammonia and nitrite spike the tank will be cycled and you can carry on like normal.

It just means that you are going to have to cycle with fish, leaving the fish in an unfiltered bag or jar is MUCH worse than an uncycled tank. Do extra partial water changes, like 30% per day for the next 2 weeks. Just use tap water with a few drops of conditioner each time and try and match the temperature.

I repeat.. right now your water is perfect, it's just your filter thats not ready, and there are ways to get around that.(water changes).

Or, if your thumb doesn't come equipped with a ruler, you could use the ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Airconditioning Engineers) Manual 'J' as required by code in most jurisdictions to size heating and cooling equipment.

You calculate the BTU heat loss (or gain) specifically, then size the equipment to meet the actual load. Adding insulation, shading, etc. can reduce the size of the equipment required.

Tue, 18 Mar 2008 14:34:55 GMT

So, it would really help to know what size tank you have or are getting. But I'll do what I can for you.
light- with a hood runs $15 up to $200 for larger tanks
filter- you can probably find one for $10 and up, once again depends on tank size
air pump- $10-$15 for a small one plus air stone and tubing, which may not be included
plants-$2-$10 depending on size, live are more as well
net- $2-$5
algae scraper- about $5, unless you want a magnetic cleaner which are more expensive
water conditioner- $5-$20 depending on what size bottle
ornaments- gravel is usually $3-$5 a bag, and it really depends on what kind you want anywhere from $1-$40 really
You may also want fish food, only a few dollars, and make sure to cycle that tank for at least a week before putting any fish in! Hope I helped!

Tue, 18 Mar 2008 14:39:40 GMT

i'm assuming you have a tank already - you'd still be better off buying a kit. they tend to price gouge you on individual items. do a little research for your area - most pet stores have their prices listed online. you may find it's cheaper to buy the whole kit, and then you'll have the start of a hospital/quarantine set-up with what you already have.

also, i wouldn't bother with the algae scraper. a basic sponge with a scouring side works great and is less awkward.

make sure you cycle your tank before adding fish. aside from the cruelty factor of unnecessary fish loss, they can be very expensive to replace.

finally, check your local craigslist - you might find some good deals on equipment :] good luck!

10 gallon-$9.99 + hood- $25.00
Filter 10 gallon- $14.99+ for bigger tanks
Air Pump- Is not needed if your filter has enough water flow or added another filter, air pump- $8.00
Live plants are cheaper- $.99-$5.99
Fake Plants you get more but a bit more pricey $5.00+
Net get a medium sized- $3.99
Algae Scrapper- Just use a kitchen sponge
Water Conditioner- $3.99

there might be some screws on the outside lean out and check, maybe 1 on top and 1 on bottom. then see if you can pull the window to the side, if you can slide it to the middle of the window frame. there should be a notch on the upper track so that you can lift it out.
If you dont have any luck sliding it (they will stick) you can use a wedge against the sidewall of the window frame maybe a board with a towell between the wall. We had suction cups you would stick to the glass that you could really grab and yank.
